Is HIV Always Detectable?
Keith Varnes
You are told in report that your patient has a history of HIV, the chart
states HIV negative. Can both be correct? Actually, yes.
People who take antiretroviral therapy (ART) daily as prescribed can
achieve and maintain an undetectable viral load (the amount of HIV in
the blood). Also, those who maintain an undetectable viral load cannot
sexually transmit the virus to others.
To put it simply: Undetectable = Untransmittable (U=U). You will probably start noticing more U=U
informational campaigns going on.
