Course Objectives:
- Identify the phases of emergency management plus components & roles of the National Incident Management System, Incident Command Structure, Healthcare, Hospital Incident Command System (HICS), National Response Framework, & Emergency Support Functions.
- Develop an increased awareness of the impacts & challenges presented by natural & man-made hazards & events on healthcare & public health infrastructure & resources.
- Relate the principles & concepts of triage, scarce resource allocation, & surge capacity to the overall care of victims in a disaster / mass casualty event.
- Recall & identify mechanisms of harm using the “TEAM CPR“ mnemonic.
- Comprehend the nature of disaster-related pathophysiology as it relates to respiratory care & pulmonary / critical care medicine, as well as relevant treatment strategies & therapeutic modalities.
- Gain a general overview of emergency preparedness & disaster medical operations & be able to apply concepts & principles to their specific healthcare roles & responsibilities as well as contribute to emergency planning & preparedness.
- Gain knowledge regarding personal protective & facility countermeasures & levels of protection, as well as psychosocial aspects of mass casualty events, crises, & disasters.
