Flovent Discontinued

Keith Varnes

Flovent Diskus and Flovent HFA, both containing fluticasone propionate and manufactured by GSK, have been available since 2000 and 2004, respectively. GSK introduced authorized generics for these drugs in May 2022 and October 2023. Now, it is time to discontinue the production of the branded versions in the United States. Starting January 1, 2024, GSK will cease production of the branded version. While this is a positive development for reducing medication costs, it may pose a challenge for patients with insurance plans covering Flovent but not its generic counterparts.

It’s crucial to note that the generics are equally effective as the branded versions, and there is no evidence suggesting one steroid works better than another. To navigate this situation, determine which generic alternatives are covered by patients’ insurance plans and opt for the most cost-effective option. Additionally, prescribe the lowest effective dose and ensure proper technique before considering any dosage adjustments.
